The Kubuqi International Desert Forum (KIDF) is the only large international forum in the world that is dedicated to promoting global desertification control and green economic development. Since its inception in 2007, this biennial forum has been held successfully on six occasions. The KIDF is jointly organized by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology, China’s National Forestry and Grassland Administration, the Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, in cooperation with the United Nations Environment and the UNCCD Secretariat, with the support of the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs. It is co-hosted by the Municipal Government of Ordos and the Elion Foundation. In the congratulatory message from Chinese President Xi Jinping, he noted that Kubuqi is a successful practice of China in desertification control, and KIDF is an important platform to achieve the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Offering a valuable opportunity for open exchanges on desertification control and eco-restoration technologies and experience, the Forum has become a globally recognized platform to demonstrate the prominent achievements China has made in promoting ecological progress with practicable philosophies as well as China’s efforts in building a green “Belt and Road”. The Forum is also a manifestation of the strong commitment of China as a responsible power in combating desertification, maintaining biodiversity and mitigating climate change.
DSBP as expert in China eco-environmental sector in the Netherlands has coordinated a Dutch delegation to participate the 7th Kubuqi International Desert Forum which will be held on July 26 – 28, 2019 in Inner Mongolia, China. This bi-annual platform is hosted by Elion Foundation, part of Elion Resources Group. DSBP is leading the delegation consist of 3 Dutch companies, Nautilus Eco-Solutions, Saline Farming Group and Verhoeve Milieu & Water. During the 3-day conference, the delegation will be meeting international participants that are active in sustainable land development. This would be a great opportunity for the Dutch delegation to extend their Chinese network and share their knowledge in particular field such as, landscape biodiversity, ecological water purification, saline agriculture and soil and groundwater remediation. During the forum, DSBP has coordinated with the KIDF secretariat to arrange onsite demonstration area for the Dutch delegation to present their expertise and innovation.
As one of the highlights of the forum, DSBP together with Nautilus Eco-Solutions and Elion Europe Technology Innovation Center are jointly presenting a futuristic design in a 3D model called, “Spiral Tree and Energy Floating Island”. KIDF is the perfect location and timing to present such an innovative design, the goal of the Spiral Tree aims to enhance urban green coverage, to create diverse urban green landscape, to provide habitat for local flora and fauna, to promote human and nature connectivity. This design is echoing the mission of KIDF for sustainable land development and responding to specific Sustainable Development Goals. The spiral shape of the design integrated the philosophy of the central Chinese policy, the “Belt and Road Initiative” which the structure goes around and from bottom to top, it resembles the positive influence that China is contributing to the global economy from its domestic market.
Urban landscapes are getting more attentions nowadays. People start to realize the intrinsic value of ecosystem services that can benefit to human beings living in the city along the rapid development. Building a green infrastructure in highly populated urban areas is almost impossible these days, thus a floating infrastructure in urban lakes or coastline which uses no additional urban space is rather ideal. Most importantly, the Spiral Tree is also a micro water purification system, the plantations along the spiral walkway can uptake nutrients in the surface water which regulates the micro environment. This is because the energy floating island converts solar energy into electricity, and it connects to a water pump under the Spiral Tree. The surface water is pumped to the top and flows downwards through the tree structure where the roots of the plantations will recover the nutrients in the water. In the future, urban areas will continue to develop , there is a urgent demand for a more livable city, where human and nature environmental quality should be largely concerned.
